Your energy usage & environmental impact
Introduction
[10 minutes] Warm-up Begin by asking students what different types of energy do you use at home or in your local
community? What do you think might be used at school to generate electricity for heating, cooling and cooking?
Take suggestions and write them on the board. Ask students to quickly differentiate those between renewable or
non-renewable energy sources. Tip: Do a sorting activity between renewable and non-renewable energy sources and
primary and secondary
sources.
Objectives
- To understand the differences between renewable and non-
renewable energy, energy use in local context, relevant renewable
energy sources to take the place of fossil fuels. - To investigate the sources of your home energy supply and calculate
your household’s emissions in Europe, at a national & local level.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this learning scenario, students will be able to:
- Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable energy
resources - Identify energy sources used at a European and national level, &
locally and the role they play within the energy system - Explain how local renewable energy sources might substitute for
fossil fuel energy to meet community needs
