Water on tap – If you’re lucky!
Introduction
Explain that there is something called environmental justice. What does environmental mean? What does justice mean? How do those combine?
Everybody has the right to a healthy environment and we have to share anything that is not healthy.
Clean water, for example, is a basic right, but not everybody has it.
While people in Europe generally do, there are other countries where clean water is not available.
Objectives
- For students to understand the injustice of the fact that in the
Western world people use hosepipes to wash cars with drinking
water and millions of people become ill and die from drinking unclean
water. - To show students a couple of ways they can save water and so be
conscious and respectful in the way they use water
Learning outcomes
By the end of this learning scenario, students will be able to:
- Understand that clean water is not available to available to 37% of
the world’s population and how hard it is for some people to get
even dirty water. - Know that this makes people highly susceptible to life threatening disease.
- To appreciate how fortunate they are to have easy access to clean water and do something to help those who don’t
- Learn the difference in water consumption when they turn off the tap in handwashing and teeth brushing so that as a sign of respect, they do not waste drinking water
