School Street re-design
Introduction
School street re-design activity examine the need to rethink how we move in our communities and the need to shift away
from fossil fuels in the transportation sector. The lesson focuses on both reducing energy use and increasing the use of
renewable energy with a specific emphasis on the benefits of complete streets that encourage active transportation
Students will analyse their personal transportation choices and the broader implications these have on energy consumption
and urban sustainability. They will engage in critical analysis, collaborative discussions, and innovative problem-solving to
envision a more sustainable transportation system.
This lesson places a special focus on sustainable transportation & smart cities—concepts that integrate active
transportation with urban living to create environmentally friendly and energy-efficient spaces. By blending personal
reflection with creative design, students will gain insights into how strategic urban planning can significantly reduce our
carbon footprint and lead us toward a greener, more sustainable future.
Objectives
- To inspire students to consider alternatives to fossil fuel dependency
in transportation, focusing on the reduction of energy use and the
increase of renewable energy. - to empower students to investigate and address the challenges of
transportation in the context of energy use and climate change.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this learning scenario, students will be able to:
- Describe current transportation use and its effects on carbon
emissions - Explain the concepts of sustainable transportation and smart
cities and identify the ways their own communities are or are not
sustainable. - Identify transportation initiatives that reduce energy use (active
transportation and transit services) and increase renewable
energy use and the way these may be supported and encouraged
through planning complete communities. - Identify the opportunity for transportation initiatives that
increase the use of renewable energy and decrease the use of
fossil fuels
